Kappa vs SHAD Motorcycle Panniers

Kappa vs SHAD

When looking for a new set of motorcycle panniers the first thing that stands out is just how many options there really are.

From the various sizes and styles to the many different functions and added features, there is certainly no shortage of choice. However, before assessing those options, the first task to undertake is deciding on which brand of motorcycle panniers to go with and two brands that instantly come to mind are Kappa and SHAD.

Although it is worth noting that both brands’ panniers offer security with their locking systems and the fact it is only SHAD panniers that are 100% waterproof, what else is worth looking out for?

Well, you have come to the right place. We have assessed the key motorcycle panniers from both Kappa and SHAD, comparing what is on offer so you do not have to.

Kappa KMS36 vs SHAD Terra Aluminium

Kicking off proceedings are the Kappa KMS36 and the SHAD terra aluminium motorcycle panniers, two sets of side cases that share similarities whilst also offering contrasting features.

Firstly, as the SHAD panniers’ name suggests, both offer robust, impact-resistant aluminium structures that have been designed to ensure the contents remain protected. That said, structure is where the first difference arises with the Kappa cases offering reinforced corners for added structural integrity while the SHAD cases incorporate rounded corners to optimise aerodynamics and internal space. Speaking of internal space, the KMS36s each hold a capacity of 36 litres whilst the terra aluminium panniers offer the best of both worlds with 35 and 47 litre options.

As for additional features, although both brands’ panniers have convenient ergonomic carry handles, SHAD’s panniers take convenience to the next level with the inclusion of a foldable tray and inner mesh to aid organisation.

Kappa K33N vs SHAD SH38x

Turning attention towards Kappa’s K33N and SHAD’s SH38x, the gap noticeably begins to widen between the two brands and the Kappa panniers simply cannot compete with their SHAD opponents.

SHAD SH38x Expandable Motorcycle Pannier

SH38x: SHAD's new and innovative expandable panniers.

As the only expandable aftermarket panniers out there, the SH38x panniers are the ace up SHAD’s sleeve, the jewel in their crown and as such, allow SHAD to gain a considerable lead. With a +70mm telescopic extension that allows them to expand by 40%, SHAD’s expandable panniers offer a flexible capacity that offers the choice of extra storage or increased mobility. In contrast, the K33Ns have a fixed size and capacity and therefore, take a back seat in this particular comparison.

It is not just the expandability that enables the SHAD side cases to come out on top as they land one more knockout blow with another key aspect. SHAD take security up a notch with the SH38x panniers through their ‘double locking system’ which not only means that the panniers themselves are lockable but also allows them to be locked directly to the motorbike once mounted.

Kappa K22N vs SHAD SH23

Unlike most other Kappa and SHAD motorcycle panniers, when looking at the K22N and SH23 cases, there really is very little to separate them.

Firstly, both sets of panniers are top opening which provides quick access and prevents contents from falling out when open while the aesthetics point narrowly goes to SHAD. Both the K22N and SH23 feature a clean, modern appearance but the difference is SHAD offer a range of coloured covers. SHAD’s SH23s also claim a marginal victory when comparing storage capacities as their 23 litre volume per side edges it over the 22 litres of each K22N.

Fitting Kits

So, with consideration given to three different panniers from each brand, it is also important to note how they are mounted to the motorcycle and how Kappa and SHAD’s respective fitting kits differ.

To avoid beating about the bush, when it comes to mourning systems, another point goes to SHAD. Their SH23 panniers mount to the ‘3P’ fitting kit which offers a secure fitment with a minimalist appearance. The aluminium SHAD panniers’ mounting to the motorbike is facilitated by their ‘4P’ fitting kit, a sturdy and robust frame which is notable for the addition of a fourth secure mounting point. Meanwhile, the innovative SH38x panniers offer the best of both worlds, mounting to either the 3P or 4P kits.

As for Kappa, each of the KMS36, K33N and K22N panniers fit to their ‘tubular holders’ which although sturdy, is also extremely bulky and are what could be described as having scaffolding attached to the sides of your motorcycle.

So, with consideration given to the similarities, differences and main features of both Kappa and SHAD’s motorcycle panniers, what is the final verdict?

While both brands certainly have a lot to offer, there is a clear winner and that winner is SHAD. There may not be anything to significantly separate the aluminium panniers and the smaller panniers, favour drastically swings towards SHAD thanks to the SH38x and their two fitting kits.
